Welcome

Back

Thank you for visiting our website!

In SAA, each member determines what behavior she or he needs to stop. Our experience has shown that addiction to relationships, romantic obsession, and compulsive avoidance of sex can be included among such behaviors, along with other behaviors more commonly considered "sexual."

What is SAA?

"Sex Addicts Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other so they may overcome their sexual addiction and help others recover from sexual addiction and dependency." -Taken from official literature of Sex Addicts Anonymous ®,  © ISO of SAA, Inc.

Each meeting is unique and has different characteristics. Some meetings members share a story or a step, others allow members to discuss various topics or problems, others concentrate on literature. Whatever the format, the main purpose for each is to help everyone stay sober from bottom line behaviors.

When attending their first meeting, newcomers are greeted by two or more members to help introduce the program and answer any questions the newcomers may have. Anyone can attend our meetings, the only requirement is a desire to stop addictive sexual behavior.

How do I know if I am a Sex Addict?

Sex Addicts Anonymous ® has published a 12 question quiz   that could help determine if you are a sex addict. Many of our current members say that this quiz helped them realize that this program was for them; maybe if can help you too.

What It's About

Back

What is a Sex Addict?

"Sex Addiction can involve a wide variety of practices. Sometimes an addict has trouble with just one unwanted behavior, sometimes with many. A large number of sex addicts say their unhealthy use of sex has been a progressive process. It may have started with an addiction to masturbation, pornography (either printed or electronic), or a relationship, but over the years progressed to increasingly dangerous behaviors."

"The essence of all addiction is the addicts' experience of powerlessness over a compulsive behavior, resulting in their lives becoming unmanageable. The addict is out of control and experiences tremendous shame, pain and self-loathing. The addict may wish to stop --- yet repeatedly fails to do so. The unmanageability of addicts' lives can be seen in the consequences they suffer: losing relationships, difficulties with work, arrests, financial troubles, a loss of interest in things not sexual, low self-esteem and despair."

"Sexual preoccupation takes up tremendous amounts of energy. As this increases for the sex addict, a pattern of behavior (or rituals) follows, which usually leads to acting out (for some it is flirting, searching the net for pornography, or driving to the park.) When the acting out happens, there is a denial of feelings usually followed by despair and shame or a feeling of hopelessness and confusion." - Taken from official literature of Sex Addicts Anonymous ®,  © ISO of SAA, Inc.

Meetings

SAA meetings are free and are run by its members. "Members" include anyone with a desire to stop unwanted sexual behavior, there is no other requirement. Anyone attending their first SAA meeting will be greeted by experienced members, introducing our program and answering questions.

Literature

While meetings are extremely important part of a recovery program, one cannot be in a meeting every hour of every day. Having program literature available is like having a meeting whenever you pick up a book, brochure, or pamphlet.

Our International Service Organization has published a list of SAA Conference-Approved Literature; anything on the list is available for purchase. Much of the literature is available to read online at no cost. Most meetings carry pamphlets at cost or for free, while some meetings have books for sale.

Meetings

Back

What is a Meeting?

An SAA group consists of two or more individuals who, using the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of SAA, meet regularly for the purpose of recovering from their addictive sexual behavior. At our meetings, we read SAA literature and share our experience, strength, and hope with each other, focusing on how the SAA program of recovery works in our lives. SAA meetings are free and are run by its members.

There are no professional or outside facilitators. We listen respectfully to what others have to say and share our experience as it seems appropriate. We use the words "I" and "for me" instead of "you" when sharing about our recovery. We do not interrupt or give advice unless asked. We address our sharing to the whole group, not to one or more individuals. A meeting is not a place to meet sexual partners, nor is it group therapy. We try not to use offensive language, or descriptions that are too explicit.

Because of the nature of our addiction, we are careful about touching or giving hugs to others in the fellowship without permission. Our focus remains on the solution, rather than the problem. We strive to practice anonymity and confidentiality, so that the meeting will be a safe place for each and every sex addict. We generally use only our first names in the group, to help ensure anonymity. Whom we meet or what is said in a meeting is treated as confidential and is not discussed with non-group members.

Literature

Back

The nice thing about literature is that it's like having a meeting wherever you travel. There is a variety of SAA pamphlets and books, including Sex Addicts Anonymous (aka "The Greenbook"), the official text of SAA. Most literature, including pamphletes and booklets, is available at most SAA meetings. If you can't find them at a meeting, they can be ordered directly from the Sex Addicts Annoymous store.

"Our message is simple and profound: that recovery from sex addiction is possible through working the Twelve Steps of SAA, and that following this program results in a spiritual awakening."

Sex Addicts Anonymous, p. 59

SAA Literature Online

"Reading recovery literature is another important tool of the program. It helps to educate, motivate, and inspire us. Reading SAA literature helps us learn how to stay sober and work a recovery program specifically tailored for us."

Sex Addicts Anonymous , p. 64

As a service to the SAA fellowship and the addict who still suffers, the ISO is pleased to offer our pamphlets and booklets in read-only format. These publications may be purchased at the online SAA Store or directly from the ISO office.

12 Steps

Back

Twelve and Twelve

12 Steps of SAA*

  1. We admitted we were powerless over our compulsive sexual behavior, that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God, as we understood God.
  4. Made a searching a fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  7. Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings.
  8. Made a list of all people we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God's will for us and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to other sex addicts and to practice these principles in our lives.

Twelve and Twelve

12 Traditions of SAA*

  1. Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon SAA unity.
  2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority - a loving God as expressed in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.
  3. The only requirement for SAA membership is a desire to stop addictive sexual behavior.
  4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or SAA as a whole.
  5. Each group has but one primary purpose - to carry its message to the sex addict who still suffers.
  6. An SAA group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the SAA name to any related facility or outside enterprise lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.
  7. Every SAA group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.
  8. Sex Addicts Anonymous should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers.
  9. SAA, as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.
  10. Sex Addicts Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the SAA name ought never be drawn into public controversy.
  11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, TV, and films.
  12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

Service

Our members have found that service becomes essential to their recovery program. Service can be as simple as leading a meeting, arriving early to help set up a meeting, or staying late to help clean up. Every meeting has other service positions available including representing the meeting at Intergroup, managing the meeting phone list, treasurer, recorder, and literature representative.

Intergroup

Southern Arizona Intergroup of SAA meets the first Thursday of each month at 5:30 pm before the 'Grace Group' meeting at the Bethel Community Baptist Church, located at 446 South Plumer Avenue. All members are welcome.
